HUNE Starts Sibling Blog
HUNE, a Community Parent Resource Center in Philadelphia, PA, has launched a blog for siblings of children and youth with disabilities. The blog is written by a sibling and provides a unique opportunity for siblings to connect and discuss their unique needs, triumphs, and stories.
HUNE director Luz Hernandez also deserves recognition for being awarded the Hispanics in Philanthropy Leadership Award! Check out the photos on HUNE’s Facebook page.

Fiesta Educativa Hosts Autism Research Conference
As part of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) research project conducted in collaboration with the University of Southern California’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), Community Parent Resource Center Fiesta Educativa co-sponsored an autism research conference that took place April 25 in Los Angeles, CA. The focus of the conference and research project is increasing the representation of Latino families of children with autism in biomedical and genetic research. TA&D Center of the Month: National High School Center
The National High School Center is part of the network of Content and Regional Comprehensive Centers funded by the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education that works collaboratively with OSEP’s Technical Assistance and Dissemination Network. The National High School Center identifies best practices and research and provides technical assistance to support high school education reform. Recently the Center launched a new online tool that helps users as the school or district level to evaluation their school reform efforts. More>>>
National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is sponsoring Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day on May 3, 2011. Policy Research Brief: Postsecondary Education for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Postsecondary Education for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: A Critical Review of the State of Knowledge and a Taxonomy to Guide Future Research was published by the University of Minnesota’s Institute on Community (ICI) Integration in February 2011. The document describes current research on postsecondary education options for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and suggests a framework that could be used to increase knowledge and understanding of the field. Parents’ Guide to Common Core Standards
The National Parent Teacher Association recently published A Parents’ Guide to Common Core Standards to help explain what students will learn in math and language arts based on the standards and ways parents can support their child’s learning at home and by building relationships to with their child’s teacher. The guides cover K-8 and high school levels and are available in English and Spanish. More>>>

New Resources from CDC’s “Learn the Signs, Act Early” Program
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Learn the Signs, Act Early program has published new resources to help parents track their children’s developmental milestones. The Track Your Child’s Developmental Milestones brochure includes a short checklist for children 6 months to 4 years, and the Milestone Moments booklet provides more in depth information on how parents can support their child’s development and when they should consider expressing concerns with their doctor. NICHCY, the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities, has redesigned their website to provide multiple pathways to information, easier options to save and share resources, and valuable content in English and Spanish.
