Parent Center Updates

PRO*Parents Conducts Trainings for Youth, Parents, and Professionals

PRO*Parents, the Parent Training and Information Center in South Carolina, has conducted a wide variety of trainings for youth, parent, and professional audiences. They have adapted the FAST Project’s Getting and Keeping the First Job curriculum for consumers and are presenting it to youth with disabilities throughout the state. They have provided IEP training to new special education attorneys and will present at the Council of Parent Advocates and Attorneys National Conference about collaborative relationships with PTIs. They have also hosted workshops by the Office of Civil Rights and ADHD experts (see photo). Connecticut Parent Advocacy Center Develops New IEP Training Videos

The Connecticut Parent Training and Information Center, the Connecticut Parent Advocacy Center (CPAC), recently introduced a new video series entitled "The IEP: A Basic Overview." The videos offer a step-by-step walk through of each section of the twelve-page Individualized Education Program (IEP) document to provide clarity and information that will help develop and maintain effective educational programs for students with disabilities. TA&D Center of the Month: National Consortium on Deaf-Blindness

The National Consortium on Deaf-Blindness is an OSEP-funded TA&D Network center that works to improve academic outcomes of children and youth with deaf-blindness ages birth-26 years through a variety of technical assistance activities for families and local and state education agencies. They have several upcoming webinars relevant to Parent Centers on topics such as the use of cochlear implants, NCDB web tour for families, employment strategies, and highly-qualified educators. United States Education Dashboard

The U.S. Department of Education recently launched a new website that provides comprehensive access to national and state education data. The site highlights progress made toward meeting President Obama’s goal of the U.S. having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. More>>>

Curriculum Focuses on Helping Children with Disabilities Get Active

Opening Doors for Youth, a project of Boston’s Children Hospital and the Institute on Community Inclusion, recently released “Let the Fun Begin,” a training curriculum for staff and volunteers of recreation programs looking to train coaches to work with children with disabilities. It includes helpful tips and resources for professionals and families on behavior management, adaptive recreation, child-specific training and more. The curriculum was developed from Project Adventure, an Opening Doors research project on inclusive recreation opportunities for children with disabilities. More>>>

Preventing Restraint and Seclusion of Young Children

The Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Intervention for Young Children (TACSEI) has published a new policy brief about the use of seclusion and restraint of young children. The document discusses problems with restraint and seclusion and suggests positive strategies to address challenging behaviors. More>>>

PEPNet Secondary and Post-Secondary Signs DVDs

PEPNet, a TA&D Networking Center that enhances educational opportunities for people who are deaf and hard of hearing, have produced several comprehensive DVDs to assist sign language interpreters with phrases commonly used in academics.

These DVDs include signs for American government, English composition, idioms, sports, math, and health and public safety. More>>>

The National Professional Development Center on Inclusion and The Center to Mobilize Early Childhood Knowledge (two OSEP-funded Technical Assistance and Dissemination Centers) have teamed up to post online discussions relating to young children with disabilities.
