Shelby Knight from the Arkansas Disability Coalition will be honored with a “Spirit of Sparc” award at a fundraiser for the Specialty Pediatric & Autism Resource Center on November 5th. She is being recognized for her many years of parent advocacy work in the community. Congratulations Shelby! Spanish Glossary of Education Terms

The OSEP Spanish Glossary was developed by the Region 1 Parent Technical Assistance Center at SPAN in collaboration with other Parent Centers to support the participation in educational decision-making of Spanish-Speaking parents of children with disabilities. The glossary includes more than 200 terms that were translated from English to Spanish by a team of Spanish speaking staff from Parent Training and Information Centers and Community Parent Resource Centers across the country. The glossary is web-based but can also be downloaded and printed. More>>>

National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability Youth Briefs

“Bullying and Disability Harassment in the Workplace: What Youth Should Know” was developed by Sean Roy of PACER Center (http://www.pacer.org/bullying/) in partnership with the National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth (www.ncwd-youth.info). The InfoBrief is designed to help youth, including youth with disabilities, recognize signs of bullying in the workplace. It offers examples of bullying situations at work and strategies to help address the issue. Sean also recently wrote a blog on this topic: http://www.ncwd-youth.info/blog/?p=287.

"Engaging Youth in Work Experiences" describes the strategies and resources to engage youth in work experiences, including internships, summer jobs, youth-run businesses/entrepreneurship, service projects and volunteer work, and part-time jobs. 

Bookshare Parent Resources

Bookshare, an OSEP-funded project that provides accessible books to students with print disabilities, offers many helpful resources to parents to help them better understand their services. Bookshare’s 12-minute Back to School webinar provides parents with tips on obtaining accessible textbooks and other reading material. They also maintain a parent listserv where parents can ask questions of Bookshare and other families of children with print disabilities. More>>>

U.S. Department of Education Guidance on Physical Education for Students with Disabilities

The U.S. Department of Education recently released guidance on improving opportunities for children and youth with disabilities to participate in physical education and athletics in school. The guidance is in response to a 2010 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report that cited limited opportunities for students with disabilities in these areas, despite legal obligations for states and schools to provide equal access. National Children's Mental Health Report Card

The Child Mind Institute developed a National Children’s Mental Health Report Card based on a survey of 1000 parents with children ages 2-24 years. Twenty-two percent of parents reported being concerned about their children’s mental health. More>>>
