Do you think you have a budding drummer? A pianist wannabe? or a talented flutist? It is said that music is a universal language regardless of your background or where you are from. While this is absolutely true, many parents wonder whether music is beneficial to their kids. Does it have any other benefits aside from entertainment?

Here are 10 reasons your little one needs to put down the TV remote and start playing a musical instrument:

 Music substantially boosts brain power

It is the desire of every parent to have a child who is mentally astute. Music can come in handy in boosting your Child’s mental development. According to leading Harvard Psychologist Howard Gardener, there is a close correlation between exceptional academic achievement and early exposure to music. Gardener goes on to say that when you introduce music to kids at an early age; it helps to stimulate the part of the brain that is responsible for emotional development, reading and Mathematics.

Where did I put the remote? I am sure that is a question you have asked yourself a few times especially if you have kids who keep misplacing things then forgetting. Want to boost your kids’ memory? Apparently music can help in enhancing your child’s memory. According to a study headed by William r. Klemm, a renowned author and senior professor of neuroscience at the University of Texas a&M participating in music at an early age does not only improve memory but also boosts a child’s ability to learn.

If you notice that your child is very shy, perhaps what will make them get out of their shell is simply picking up a musical instrument. When children participate in music groups, they learn extremely important life skills such as relating to others, discipline and also building leadership skills. This makes them more equipped to thrive in any environment.

Music is a huge confidence builder

Sometimes all a child needs to be confident in his/her abilities is learning to play a musical instrument. A musical instrument is an opportunity to develop a new skill, when they finally master that instrument their confidence is boosted substantially.

By regularly playing simple instruments such as the guitar, drums and other percussion instruments, your child will enhance his/her coordination skills substantially.

Introducing music to kids early will teach them patience

Patience is an important virtue that will serve your child throughout their entire life, sadly we live in a world where that is ignored and instead instant gratification is preferred. When learning to play a musical instrument, it takes time to master it, this helps to build confidence. If your child is either in a band or orchestra they learn to be patient since they have to be willing to work with a team so that the sound is not messed up, in most cases they have to wait their turn. This inadvertently fosters patience.

Music will help your child develop communication skills, literacy and language

According to knowledgeable and experienced child psychologists such as Alison Gopnik listening to music from an early age stimulates senses and helps children develop basic skills such as language and communication. When they are toddlers, listening to music or learning to sing helps to develop writing and reading skills and also improves fluency significantly. This is why in kindergarten teachers use songs as a fun way of helping kids learn pronunciation of new words.
