How to deal with toddler tantrums

February 13, 2018 by Mandy Wright

Most people who have dealt with toddlers will tell you that will they can be a joy; they have a tendency of choosing the most inopportune time to express their frustration or anger. Although a tantrum is absolutely normal, not knowing how to handle your child when they are in the middle of a tantrum can make the situation worse. A tantrum is a call for attention from your child when they are uncomfortable, tired, hungry or want a particular person or object.  Armed with the six strategies we will mention above, you will definitely calm down your toddler when they have a meltdown or breakdown whether it is public or in private.

Remain calm

No matter how loud or stubborn your little kid is, is extremely important to remain calm and cool every time your little goober throws a tantrum. It is easy to get too frustrated with the situation and start yelling at your kid; after all we are just human. It is not time to lecture them or yell at them about what they are doing. Simply tell them in a gentle but firm voice how they are expected to do and then model that behavior. Your kids imitate how you cat so take it easy if you want to calm them down.

Tell the Child to Use Their Words

Sometime the reason a toddler throws a tantrum can be as simple as just the inability to communicate what is bothering them at that time. Inability to articulate what they need cause them to get frustrated and they begin to seek your attention in a different way. The easiest way to sort out this issue is by  looking your toddler straight in the eye and explain to them  the best you can to use their words;. Allow them to express their feeling and frustrations through words and not a tantrum.

Avoid arguing with your child no matter how cranky and frustrating they are

The worst mistake that most parents make is trying to argue with their toddler when they are in the throes of a tantrum. Doing this is not only useless but will most likely worsen the situation.

Arguing with them will only communicate to them that you don’t care about what they want and are not trying to solve their problem. Your voice should be calm, relaxed but firm.

Try as much as you can to distract your toddler from their tantrum

Simple trick that will save you the headache of a tantrum is distracting your toddler. Find something that interests them and excites them then ping it out. This is where gadgets come in handy. For instance, if you are in a public space perhaps it is time to show them that exciting game you have saved on your iPad or phone. This will excite them to the point that they may even forget they were in the throes of a tantrum.

Never ignore very aggressive behavior

Some toddlers take tantrums to another level by behaving aggressively such as hitting, slapping, throwing objects at you, biting. When or if your child acts aggressively; you can’t don’t just ignore them. Instead stop that behavior by reprimanding them immediately (again ensure your voice is calm but firm).

Try and get to the root of the problem

A tantrum will recur over and over again if you don’t figure out the root cause. Toddlers are not just stubborn; there is reason why everything happens including tantrums. Is there an interruptions in the daily schedule? Are they hungry? Are they bored? Or are you not giving them enough attention? These are some of the common causes of tantrums.  These questions will help you identify what is going on with your little goober.

When you identify the root cause of the problem and solve it, your toddler will come back to their pleasant self.
