Teaching your kids about weather and climate change

March 13, 2018 by Mandy Wright

and climate change

Our kids will inherit the world from us; it is therefore our God given responsibility to create a responsible future generation. Climate change is a huge problem that is negatively affecting every part of the world. By teaching our kids how to be responsible when it comes to climate we are creating a generation that will care and take responsibility when need arises.

Get your kid interested in nature

Get your kid interested in nature

Your child will only appreciate weather and climate if they know and understand the role that it plays in their lives. Take your child on a nature walk regularly. For instance take them to see rivers, forests, mountains or even the local park. Let them interact with nature through climbing the trees , plucking and smelling the flowers and even playing with dirt. After that teach them how clients plays a role in enabling the existence of what is found in nature/. Also explain to them that climate change poses a threat to what already exists in nature. This will get them thinking about how important it is to conserve the environment.

Plant a tree with your little goober

Plant a tree with your child

There are many books that touch on weather and climate. Choose one that specifically deals with trees. Go through the pictures with your little goober and help them understand the role that climate and weather plays in the growth of trees. Planting trees can be a fun exercise that you and your kid will enjoy. For instance, on their birthday plant a tree with them and let them give it a special name. This attachment they create with the tree will make appreciate the importance of climate and good weather. The aim is to help your kid fall in love with nature.

Foster positive Eco friendly habits for the entire family

Kids learn through seeing, hearing and doing. What they see growing up is what they will do in their childhood and believe in when they are adults. Don’t just tell them stories of gloom and doom when it comes to climate, also tell them that they can make a positive contribution that will have a long lasting positive effect. Teach kids that every single thing they do when it comes to weather and climate change counts. For instance, every time they waste water they are contributing to drought elsewhere in the world.

Don’t just tell them stories of gloom and doom when it comes to climate, also tell them that they can make a positive contribution that will have a long lasting positive effect

Here are 4 positive eco-friendly habits to teach your kids:

Never leave taps running-Help your little goober understand that they can waste more than 40,000 litres of water in a single day by simply leaving a tap running.

Don’t use the car unless it is absolutely necessary-Teach your kids about saving fuel through not driving the car unless it is absolutely necessary. Encourage them to jog, walk, cycle and take the bus.

Encourage kids not to use plastic bags

One of the biggest environmental pollutants is plastic shopping bags. This is because they are dreadfully wasteful and end up filling water bodies and the land since they are not biodegradable.

Turn off all electronics and electric devices when they are not in use

Teach kids early in life to always switch of any electric devices or the lights when they are not in use.
